Islands of the Mediterranean Sea
A holiday on an island offers the ideal getaway break. The photos always depict white, sandy beaches, clear and calm blue waters as well as a lively, colourful night-life when the boats’ lights reflect on the water. These photos look almost unreal and the reality of it can only be confirmed by a visit to the islands.
Sicily is an Italian island and the largest one in the Mediterranean Sea. It includes surrounding minor islands to form an independent region of Italy. Its rich culture is composed of unique arts, literature, music, architecture and cuisine. It contains many archaeological sites of importance such as the Valley of the Temples, Selinute and the Necropolis of Pantalica. Cyprus is an independent Republic with loads of activities for the fun-seeker. It is called the island of love because it is the birthplace of the legendary Greek goddess of love and pleasure, Aphrodite. Cyprus is also studded with ancient landmarks that are well worth the visit. The island of Crete has the most population of all the Greek islands and is the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea. It is full of rich culture of which the local people are very proud. They have their own Cretan Greek dialect and it is the language spoken on the island. Crete was the heart of Europe’s first advanced civilization, the Minoan people. The island has been governed by several Greek entities as well as a couple of empires such as the Romans; it eventually joined the Kingdom of Greece in 1913.
Corfu Island is another of Greece’s island attractions that draw thousands of tourists each year. It was one of the first Greek islands to open to the tourism market and with its long experience, it offers well coordinated services. Corfu is full of striking landscapes and has gorgeous resorts along the beach. Here, too, car hire is the best option for travelling on the island.
The Mediterranean offers many other islands that are ideal for holidays. The variety of activities each island has caters for every need and for every type of person, young and old. The sites to see, sounds to hear and the smells and tastes to experience are worth it. It is just a matter of choosing which island to visit first.
